Lesson Plan No. 3!

Lesson No. 3 – Incorporating Quotes, Attribution, etc. etc…
Incorporating Quotes
(11:30:00 – 11:44:55)

Ask students what they believe a quote is.

–          Word for word.

–          Not taken out of context. (example of out of contextness)

How do we put quotes into our story?

–          Own paragraph

–          How to lead into/introduce them

–          Identifying the source beforehand

–          Open quotation mark before the start of the quote

–          Punctuation INSIDE quotation marks

–          Close quotation mark + name + said + period.

–          “Show them how to do this,” Matt said. “And by this I mean two sentences with a break in the middle.”

–          “Show (the students) how to do this.” [Original quote = “Show them how to do this.”]

–          Show the students how to do a “quote like this.”

–          Show the students how to do an ellipses. (Embarrassingly enough I’m rusty here. Gonna need some Hope-help)

Have a few students come to the board to practice some of this stuff! What Fun. WHAT fun.

Attribution (11:45:07 – 11:55:55) (Ya gotta give Matthew 12 seconds to goof off)

Names

–          If they have a title, give it to your reader!

–          Titles, if before the name, are capitalized!!

–          Ask your source for their exact title!!!

–          Spell name correctly.

–          …Seriously do not spell name wrong. (ask source how to spell it)

–          Second reference = last name only.

–          Two people with same last name…use full name on all references.

Randomness

–          RARELY start a story with a quote.

–          If powerful quote, you can finish your story with it (…right Nicole?)

Have a few students come to the board to practice some of this stuff! What Fun. WHAT fun.

Questions (force them to ask some) (11:55:56 – 12:00:00.00)

  1. Great job Matthew! Let’s get them to interview each other and quote and paraphrase. Maybe the topic could be about homecoming.
You can have 19 good off seconds and yes to ending with a quote. 🙂
